Running an EV charger cable across the pavement in Newcastle

Many homes in Newcastle's inner terraces, in areas such as Heaton, Byker and Fenham, have no driveway, so the car is parked on the street. A cable lying across a public footpath is a trip hazard, and it's not something you can simply do: a cable channel or cover across the footway needs the permission of the highway authority, which in Newcastle is Newcastle City Council.

Councils don't all treat these requests the same way, and policies change, so the first step is to check the council's current guidance or contact its highways team before paying for anything. Ask what the process is, whether a licence or fee applies, what type of cover is acceptable, and whether public liability insurance is required.

Even where a channel is allowed, it typically only makes sense if you can park reliably outside your own house. If you can't, the alternatives are on-street residential chargepoints, which councils can install with support from the government's on-street residential chargepoint scheme, or charging at work or at a nearby public charger.
