The government's original EV Homecharge Scheme grant for homeowners with a driveway closed back in March 2022, so most homeowners buying and fitting a charger at their own house today won't be eligible for a grant towards the installation itself. It's a common misconception, so it's worth knowing upfront rather than budgeting around a discount that no longer applies to that group.
There are, however, two schemes still running that are worth checking if they apply to you. The EV Chargepoint Grant for renters and flat owners can help towards the cost of a chargepoint if you rent your home or own a leasehold flat, provided you have a dedicated, private off-street parking space you're legally entitled to use, and — if you're renting — your landlord agrees to the installation. The Workplace Charging Scheme is a separate grant aimed at businesses, charities and public sector organisations installing chargepoints for staff or fleet use, covering a number of sockets per site.
Both schemes are administered by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) and require you to use an OZEV-authorised installer, and both are subject to change — the percentage covered, the cap per socket, and the eligibility rules have all been updated in the past, so it's always worth checking gov.uk or the Find a Grant service for the current position before you apply rather than relying on a figure you've seen elsewhere, including this page.
If you're a landlord, our guide to EV charger installation for landlords covers how the renters' grant fits into that decision. If you're weighing up cost more generally, our full installation cost guide explains what else affects your price beyond any grant you might be eligible for.
