A good installer is a registered, qualified electrician who can self-certify chargepoint work and will provide the certification when the job is done. Ask which scheme they're registered with and, if you might be eligible for a grant, whether they're OZEV-authorised.
Compare quotes like for like. A cheap quote may leave out a longer cable run, an earthing solution, a consumer unit upgrade or making good after drilling, so ask exactly what's included. A quote that follows a proper survey is generally more reliable than a fixed price given over the phone.
Check the practical details too: how they'll notify your network operator, what warranty they offer on the work and the charger, and how you can contact them if something goes wrong after installation. Recent reviews and photos of completed jobs are a helpful sign.
