Can I install an EV charger myself?

In practice, no — a home EV charger should be installed by a qualified electrician. It involves connecting a high-current circuit to your consumer unit and, in England, chargepoint installation is notifiable work under the Building Regulations, which means it has to be carried out and certified by a suitably registered person or approved by building control.

There's a safety reason for that as well as a legal one. A charger draws a sustained heavy load for hours, so any weakness in the circuit, the protection or the earthing is far more likely to show up than with an ordinary socket. Getting the earthing arrangement right, in particular, is a specific requirement for outdoor chargepoints.

Beyond safety, using a qualified installer matters for practical reasons too: you'll get the certification that home insurers and future buyers can ask for, the installer will notify your network operator, and if you're eligible for any grant, it will normally require an OZEV-authorised installer.

The good news is that a straightforward job is quick. Tell us about your home in the quote form and we'll help match you with a suitable local installer.
