Tethered vs untethered EV charger: which is better?

A tethered charger has a charging cable permanently attached to the unit; an untethered charger has a Type 2 socket and you plug in your own cable. Both charge at exactly the same speed and both are common in UK homes — the choice comes down to convenience, appearance and how many cars you'll be charging.

Tethered chargers are quicker to use: you pull the cable off the unit and plug it in, with nothing to carry in the boot. The downside is the cable is fixed, so it has to be long enough for wherever you park, and if you change to a car with a different connector you may have to change more than the cable.

Untethered chargers look tidier, because there's no cable hanging on the wall, and you can swap or replace cables easily. They also suit households with more than one EV, as each car can use its own cable. The trade-off is you need to store the cable somewhere and remember to bring it home if you use it away from home.

For most drivers with one car and a fixed parking spot, tethered is the convenient choice; if you want flexibility or a cleaner look, go untethered. Either way, tell us your preference in the quote form and the installer will quote accordingly.
