Three-phase EV charger at home: is it worth it?

Most UK homes have a single-phase supply, which limits a home charger to around 7kW. A three-phase supply can carry more, allowing a faster charger, and is more common in larger or rural properties and some newer builds. Check your meter tails and consumer unit, or ask your installer, to see which you have.

Having three-phase doesn't automatically mean you need a faster charger. Many popular EVs can only accept 7kW or 11kW on AC charging, so a 22kW charger would give no benefit. The exception is a car that can accept a higher AC rate, or a household with more than one EV that would benefit from load management across chargers.

If your home is single-phase, upgrading to three-phase means work by your network operator, which for the North East is Northern Powergrid, and it can be costly and slow. For the vast majority of drivers, 7kW overnight is more than enough, so it's usually not worth it just for a charger.
