EV charger keeps tripping the RCD or electrics

If your EV charger keeps tripping the RCD or a breaker in your consumer unit, treat it as a safety issue rather than an annoyance to reset. A trip means the protection is doing its job, detecting a fault current or an overload, and repeatedly resetting it without finding the cause isn't safe.

Common causes include a fault in the charger or its cable, moisture getting into a connection or the car's charging inlet, an earth leakage from the car or another appliance on the same circuit, or a protective device that isn't compatible with the charger's requirements. Occasionally the fault is with the car rather than the charger, so it's worth noting whether it happens with one vehicle only.

A useful thing to note for an electrician is when it trips: immediately on plugging in, part-way through a charge, or only in wet weather. That points them toward the cause much faster.

Stop using the charger until it's been checked by a qualified electrician. Tell us what's happening in the quote form and we'll help match you with a suitable local installer, and see our EV charger repair and replacement pages for what's involved.
