Why is my EV charger not working?

A home EV charger that's stopped working is usually down to one of a handful of common causes: a tripped RCD or circuit breaker, a lost Wi-Fi or app connection, a firmware or software fault, or — less often — a genuine hardware issue with the unit or its cable. Working through these roughly in that order is usually the quickest way to narrow down what's going on.

If your charger keeps tripping the electrics, that's a safety-related fault and not something to keep resetting and ignoring — it's worth getting it looked at by a qualified electrician rather than continuing to use it. A charger that's simply lost its Wi-Fi connection but still charges when you plug in is a much lower-priority issue, often fixable by checking your router or the charger's network settings.

Smart chargers that won't schedule charging or show as 'offline' in the app are commonly a connectivity issue rather than a fault with the charging hardware itself, so it's worth checking your home network before assuming the unit needs replacing.

If basic checks haven't resolved it, or you're dealing with anything that involves your electrics tripping repeatedly, it's time to bring in a professional rather than keep troubleshooting yourself. Tell us what's happening in the quote form and we'll help connect you with a suitable local installer who can diagnose it properly — and if the charger's reached the end of its life, our EV charger replacement page covers what's involved in fitting a new one.
