Home Installation
Home EV charger installation
Charging overnight on your own driveway means never queuing at a public charger. Here’s what a typical home installation involves.
A home EV charger installation is generally the most common — and usually the most straightforward — type of installation, suited to homeowners with a driveway, garage or private parking space. An installer will assess your consumer unit and existing electrical capacity, agree a mounting location with you (typically an exterior wall near where you park), plan the cable route, and then fit, connect and test the unit.
Most homes can accommodate a home charger without major work, though the specifics — cable length, whether your consumer unit needs upgrading, whether any minor groundworks are needed — vary from property to property. Our installation requirements guide covers what to expect in more detail, and our cost guide explains what tends to move the price up or down.
You'll also need to decide between a basic charger and a smart charger with app-based scheduling — useful if your energy supplier offers a cheaper overnight tariff for EV charging. If you're not sure which suits you, our EV chargers overview compares the most popular options homeowners ask us about.
Driveway or garage
Off-street parking close to your consumer unit usually means the simplest, quickest installation.
Cable distance
The further your parking is from your electrics, the more cable run — and potentially cost — is involved.
Smart vs basic
A smart charger adds scheduling and app control; a basic charger is simpler but can't take advantage of off-peak tariffs.
Consumer unit
Older consumer units occasionally need upgrading before a charger can be safely fitted.

How long does a home installation take?
Most straightforward home installations are completed within a day. See our guide on installation timescales for a fuller breakdown.
Can I choose which charger brand I get?
